In the current market, developers and home owners reap huge financial gains when residential properties are sold into land assemblies or are torn down to build new homes. Everyone profits... except for the renters who may live in existing house.

As Vancouver rapidly densifies, renters in single family homes and condo units are at risk of being demovicted and thrown into one of the world's most unaffordable housing markets with no compensation.

The City of Vancouver's Tenant Relocation and Protection Policy (TRPP) only applies to certain types of rentals. If you rent in a building that is not in the highlighted area below, or has less than six units, (such as a condo, single family home or basement suite), you are not covered under TRPP. In 2018, Vancouver City Council heard a motion that included expanding TRPP to "apply to all forms of rental accommodation, all areas of Vancouver and to all permits which will result in the temporary or permanent displacement of tenants".

This clause of the motion was referred to staff for further study. Council will make a final decision sometime in 2019.
